Business Goals for 2019

Business Goals for 2019

Happy New Year! Did you make any personal resolutions or business goals for 2019? On Twitter, my friend, Dick Kusleika, shared a cartoon by Josh Hara (@yoyoha), with “Realistic New Year’s Resolutions.” I might try the first one – “Keep my devices charged”. That sounds doable!

Here’s a link to the Resolutions cartoon on Twitter, but don’t click if you’re offended by NSFW language. You’ve been warned!

Business Goals for 2019

For my Contextures business, I don’t have any earth-shattering goals planned. Things have been going well, so I’ll keep posting to my blog and website, and pay a bit more attention to my pivot table blog.

Another minor goal is to make more Excel videos in 2019, and get them up on my Contextures YouTube channel.

To keep track of my progress, I made queries in Access, to pull all the articles, videos and sample files published in the current year. Then Power Query pulls those results into an Excel file, so everything shows up in a summary sheet. Sweet!

Focus on One Thing

In 2018, I started reading more books, using our local library’s online borrowing system. I’ve always read lots of magazine articles, blog posts, and technical stuff, but not many books. It’s been great to get back into that.

Currently, I’m reading The ONE Thing, by Gary Keller, who says that you have to focus on the most important thing (in life or business), in order to get results.

Inspired by that thought, I’m dropping a few projects that took my attention away from more important things. It’s tempting to keep working on pet projects, because you’ve invested time in them over the years. But, looking at them objectively, it’s time to say goodbye!

Keeping Some Projects

But don’t worry, if you follow my What’s for Supper? blog – that will continue! There’s no revenue from that supper blog, but it pays for itself by keeping us organized. It only takes me an hour or so every weekend, and the menu and recipe links save us time all week long. And yes, the meal plan is done in Excel, and the HTML for the blog post is created in Excel too.

Planning Big Changes?

Are you planning any big changes with your business goals for 2019, or keeping things pretty much the same?
