Instead of spending time on useful work, I have to scan that folder full of junk, in case any legitimate messages ended up in they accidentally. But I finally found a setting that has been a big help this week.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Outlook Junk Folder Messages<\/h2>\n<p>Before I changed this setting, I\u2019d open the Junk folder, and quickly scroll through a long list of messages.<\/p>\n<p>In the screen shot below, there\u2019s a small part of a recent list.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/outlookjunkfoldersort03.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px currentcolor; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"look for valid messages in Outlook junk folder\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/outlookjunkfoldersort03_thumb.png\" alt=\"look for valid messages in Outlook junk folder\" width=\"370\" height=\"355\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It has multiple scam messages from \u201cYour Wallet\u201d, and \u201cDiego Hernando\u201d, and lots of others, pretending to be banks, or retail stores, or important government officials.<\/p>\n<p>Buried in the middle, I&#8217;ve highlighted a legitimate message from Hostgator, with details about a domain renewal.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, I spotted that message, and marked it as \u201cNot Spam\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>But I\u2019ve probably missed many legitimate emails over the years, because of Junk folder overload.<\/p>\n<h2>Outlook Folder Sorted By Date<\/h2>\n<p>By default, Outlook folders have the messages sorted by date.<\/p>\n<p>Is that always the best setting?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Inbox \u2013 Maybe<\/strong>: Sorting by date lets you quickly spot the newest messages.\n<ul>\n<li>Maybe a client or co-worker needs your help urgently!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Junk \u2013 No<\/strong>: I don\u2019t care <strong>when<\/strong> the spam messages arrive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Instead of the date, I need to focus on who each message is <strong>FROM.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/outlookjunkfoldersort02.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px currentcolor; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"Outlook folders messages sorted by date\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/outlookjunkfoldersort02_thumb.png\" alt=\"Outlook folders messages sorted by date\" width=\"370\" height=\"355\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Sort Junk Folder By Name<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s embarrassing that I left the sort setting on Date for so long. But, I\u2019ve finally smartened up, and fixed the problem<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how to change the sort order in the Outlook Junk folder, to focus on WHO sent the email:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At the left, in the list of folders, click on the Junk folder<\/li>\n<li>In the centre panel, all the current messages are listed<\/li>\n<li>At the top right of the list, where is says \u201cBy Date\u201d, click the drop-down arrow\n<ul>\n<li>A drop-down list appears, with settings in 3 categories: Filter, Arrange By, Sort By<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>In the Arrange By section, click on the From option, to select that setting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the screen shot below, I\u2019ve put the sections side-by-side, but in Outlook it\u2019s one long list.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/outlookjunkfoldersort05.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px currentcolor; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"Outlook folder options  Filter, Arrange By, Sort By\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/outlookjunkfoldersort05_thumb.png\" alt=\"Outlook folder options  Filter, Arrange By, Sort By\" width=\"459\" height=\"330\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Junk Folder Items Sorted By From<\/h2>\n<p>Now that the Junk folder is sorted by \u201cFrom\u201d, it\u2019s much easier to spot any legitimate emails in the list of messages.<\/p>\n<p>In the screen shot below, I can quickly\u00a0 skim past all the prolific spammers, like Diego Hernando, and the fake Costco emails.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s made my morning email routine much easier, and I can move any legitimate emails back to the inbox.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/outlookjunkfoldersort01.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px currentcolor; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"Junk Folder Items Sorted By From\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/outlookjunkfoldersort01_thumb.png\" alt=\"Junk Folder Items Sorted By From\" width=\"415\" height=\"415\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Get Rid of the Junk<\/h2>\n<p>After I move any real messages back to the Inbox, I follow these steps to get rid of the junk mail:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In the list at the left, right-click on the Junk folder, then click on Empty Folder<\/li>\n<li>When the confirmation appears, click the Yes button, to permanently delete the Junk folder messages.\n<ul>\n<li>Everything in the &#8220;Junk&#8221; folder will be permanently deleted. Continue?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And then you can get back to your real work, instead of wasting extra time on your junk mail.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/outlookjunkfoldersort07.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px currentcolor; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"Everything in the &quot;Junk&quot; folder will be permanently deleted.
