Here\u2019s one of my favourite macros, and the steps for setting it up.<\/p>\n<h2>Repeated Tasks<\/h2>\n<p>I keep Notepad++ open all day, making notes as I go, and I like to section things off with lines. <\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t take long to type a string of equal signs, or a line of hyphens. But I make lots of lines every day, and those little bits of time, repeated over and over, can add up quickly!<\/p>\n<h2>Video: Record and Save Notepad++ Macros<\/h2>\n<p>In this short video, I show how to record a Notepad++ macro, then test it, and save it, to use later.<\/p>\n<p>There are step-by-step instructions below the video.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Record and Use Notepad++ Macros to Save Time\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WfuoJuA2oYQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><h2>Macro Makes Lines<\/h2>\n<p>So, to save my time every day, I made a couple of macros that I can use, to insert each line quickly. <\/p>\n<p>For example, if I press Ctrl + Shift + =, one of my recorded macros enters  a long line of 60 equal sign characters, followed by the Enter key, to go to the next line. <\/p>\n<p>If I use that macro 20 times in one day, I can save over 1000 keystrokes!<\/p>\n<h2>Record a Macro<\/h2>\n<p>Here are the steps that I followed, to create that type of macro in Notepad++. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To start, click in your Notepad++ document, where you want the insertion point<\/li>\n<li>Next, click the Macro command, at the top of the screen. <\/li>\n<li>In the drop-down list, click Start recording. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/notepadpp_macrorecord02.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"499\" height=\"408\" title=\"Start recording a macro\" style=\"border-image: none; display: inline; background-image: none;\" alt=\"Start recording a macro\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/notepadpp_macrorecord02_thumb.png\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In your Notepad++ file, slowly and carefully use the keystrokes that you want to record in the macro<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>For this example, I typed a long line of equal signs<\/li>\n<li>Then I pressed the Enter key, to move to next line in the note<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<li>When you\u2019re finished typing, go to the Macro command again, and click Stop recording. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Tip<\/b>: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It doesn\u2019t matter how slowly you do the steps while you record them! <\/li>\n<li>Notepad++ plays back the keystrokes that you record, as quickly as possible. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/notepadpp_macrorecord03.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"303\" height=\"214\" title=\"click Stop recording\" style=\"border-image: none; display: inline; background-image: none;\" alt=\"click Stop recording\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/notepadpp_macrorecord03_thumb.png\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Test the Recorded Macro<\/h2>\n<p>The next step is to test what you&#8217;ve recorded. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Click in the note, to place the insertion point<\/li>\n<li>Click the Macro command again, and then click Playback. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/notepadpp_macrorecord04.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"278\" height=\"201\" title=\"test the recorded macro with Playback\" style=\"border-image: none; display: inline; background-image: none;\" alt=\"test the recorded macro with Playback\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/notepadpp_macrorecord04_thumb.png\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The recorded code will run, and it should create a new line, like the one that you recorded.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>OK<\/strong>: If the playback worked as expected, you\u2019re ready to move on to the next step. <\/li>\n<li><strong>Not OK<\/strong>: If there was a problem, go through the macro recording steps again. <\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>Take your time while doing the steps, to ensure that there aren\u2019t any problems this time. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Save the Macro<\/h2>\n<p>After the playback is correct, it\u2019s time to save your macro.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Click the Macro command, then click Save Current Recorded Macro. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/notepadpp_macrorecord05.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"312\" height=\"191\" title=\"savethe recorded macro\" style=\"border-image: none; display: inline; background-image: none;\" alt=\"savethe recorded macro\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/notepadpp_macrorecord05_thumb.png\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When the Save Macro dialog box opens, fill in the required information.<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>For example, call this macro <b>MY LINE =<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<li>Next, choose the shortcut keys that you want to use<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>For this macro, I used <b>Ctrl<\/b> and <b>Alt<\/b><\/li>\n<li>In the drop-down list of characters, I chose the <b>equal sign<\/b>. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<li>Finally, to save the macro, click the OK button<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/notepadpp_macrorecord06.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"296\" height=\"216\" title=\"enter the macro shortcut settings\" style=\"border-image: none; display: inline; background-image: none;\" alt=\"enter the macro shortcut settings\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/notepadpp_macrorecord06_thumb.png\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Run the Saved Macro<\/h2>\n<p>After a macro is saved, you can run it any time you\u2019re working in Notepad++<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First, click where you want the text to be inserted<\/li>\n<li>Next, press the macro\u2019s shortcut key combination, to run the macro<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this example, if I press <strong>Ctrl+Alt+=<\/strong>, Notepad++ inserts a long line of equal signs, at my insertion point. <\/p>\n<h2>Run Macro from Toolbar<\/h2>\n<p>If you haven\u2019t used a macro recently, you might not remember its shortcut keys.<\/p>\n<p>Another way to run a macro is with menu commands<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First, click where you want the text to be inserted<\/li>\n<li>Next, click the Macro command on the toolbar<\/li>\n<li>Click on one of the macros that\u2019s listed there, to run that macro. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Run a Macro Multiple Times<\/h2>\n<p>Most of the time, I only want to run a macro once. But if you want to run a macro multiple times, there\u2019s a built-in command for that.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Click the Macro command, then click the Run a Macro Multiple Times command.<\/li>\n<li>When the dialog box opens, click the drop down arrow, and select the name of the macro that you want to run.<\/li>\n<li>Next, click the Run option, and type the number of times that you want to run the macro<\/li>\n<li>OR, clicNextk the Run until the end of the file option<\/li>\n<li>After you\u2019ve entered those settings, click the Run button.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: In the screen shot below, I hadn\u2019t clicked the Run option yet<\/p>\n<p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/notepadpp_macrorecord11.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"254\" height=\"186\" title=\"Run Notepad++Macro Multiple Times\" style=\"border: 0px currentcolor; border-image: none; display: inline; background-image: none;\" alt=\"Run Notepad++Macro Multiple Times\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/notepadpp_macrorecord11_thumb.png\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Notepad++ Macro Conflict<\/h2>\n<p>When you\u2019re saving a Notepad++ macro, be sure to use a unique shortcut key combination. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you use a shortcut key combination that\u2019s already used, a conflict warning will appear at the bottom left of the Shortcut dialog box.<\/li>\n<li>In the screen shot below, I used Ctrl + Alt + = and there\u2019s already a saved macro with that shortcut.<\/li>\n<li>A CONFLIC FOUND warning is showing, at the bottom left of the dialog box.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, Notepad++ doesn\u2019t stop me from using the shortcut again. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I can click the OK button to save this duplicate macro shortcut<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/notepadpp_macrorecord07.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"272\" height=\"190\" title=\"macro shortcut conflict found\" style=\"border-image: none; display: inline; background-image: none;\" alt=\"macro shortcut conflict found\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/notepadpp_macrorecord07_thumb.png\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Modify Shortcuts or Delete Macros<\/h2>\n<p>To manage your macros, you can open the Shortcut mapper dialog box<\/p>\n<ul><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<li>Click the Macro command, then click the Modify Shortcuts\/Delete Macro<br \/>\ncommand.<\/li>\n<li>When the Shortcut mapper dialog box opens, it shows a list of the saved macros, along with their shortcut key combinations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the screen shot below, two of the macros are highlighted in red, because they have the same shortcut key combinations<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/notepadpp_macrorecord08.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"349\" height=\"333\" title=\"macro shortcut mapper with conflicting macros\" style=\"border-image: none; display: inline; background-image: none;\" alt=\"macro shortcut mapper with conflicting macros\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/notepadpp_macrorecord08_thumb.png\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Fix Conflicting Macros<\/h2>\n<p>If there are conflicting macros, you should fix that situation, to prevent problems. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In the screen shot below, macros number 9 and 11 have the same shortcut keys. <\/li>\n<li>I\u2019ve clicked in macro 11, to select it, and it has a brighter highlighting now.<\/li>\n<li>In the box below the list, it shows the conflict details:<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>Macros \u2013 9 \u2013 MY LINE = (Ctrl+Alt+-)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<li>Because macro 11 is a duplicate of macro 9, I will delete it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At the bottom of the Shortcut mapper dialog box, there are 4 buttons \u2013 Modify, Clear, Delete, and Close<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>With Macro 11 selected, I clicked the Delete button.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/notepadpp_macrorecord09.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"421\" height=\"289\" title=\"delete macro in shortcut mapper\" style=\"border-image: none; display: inline; background-image: none;\" alt=\"delete macro in shortcut mapper\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/notepadpp_macrorecord09_thumb.png\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A confirmation message appeared:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Are you sure?<\/li>\n<li>Are you sure you want to delete this shortcut<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are OK and Cancel buttons, and I clicked the OK button, to delete the conflicting macro<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/notepadpp_macrorecord10.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"376\" height=\"202\" title=\"confirmation message for deleting Run Notepad++Macro shortcut\" style=\"border-image: none; display: inline; background-image: none;\" alt=\"confirmation message for deleting Run Notepad++Macro shortcut\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/notepadpp_macrorecord10_thumb.png\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Modify a Macro Shortcut<\/h2>\n<ul><!--EndFragment--><\/ul>\n<p>Another way to fix a conflict is to modify the macro shortcut.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Select the macro in the list<\/li>\n<li>Click the Modify button, to open the Shortcut dialog box<\/li>\n<li>You can change macro name, and\/or the shortcut keys<\/li>\n<li>Click OK to complete the change<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Cannot Modify Recorded Keystrokes<\/h3>\n<p>Unfortunately, you can\u2019t modify the recorded keystrokes.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To use different keystrokes, record a new macro, with the keystrokes that you want to use<\/li>\n<li>Then, save the new macro, and delete the old, incorrect one.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n<p><h2>How Will You Use Notepad++ Macros?<\/h2>\n<p>Try recording one or two macros in Notepad++ to see if that helps you save time.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What Notepad tasks do you repeat several times a day?<\/li>\n<li>Or, are there daily entries that take a few seconds every day, several time a week?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Those tasks could be perfect as macros!<\/p>\n<p>____________<a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/notepadpp_macrorecord07.png\"><br \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To save time in Notepad++, you can record and run macros.
