I set up an iPhone shortcut, Start Timer, but it keeps repeating, every time I stop it. Where did I go wrong, and how can I fix it, so the timer runs once, and then stops?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tip<\/strong>: You can <a href=\"#fix\">jump to the Fix section<\/a>, to see my quick fix. Or keep reading, to see how I got into this problem, and then got out of it!<\/p>\n<h2>iPhone Clock App<\/h2>\n<p>Every day, I use the iPhone Clock app to set timers and alarms. It\u2019s easy to go down a rabbit hole while you\u2019re working, and forget about the other things that need to get done!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>With alarms and timers, I get a gentle reminder to come out of that rabbit hole, and focus on something else for a few minutes.<\/li>\n<li>That helps prevent stressful times, when I realize something didn\u2019t get done, and I have to rush to fix the situation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But things went wrong recently, with a Timer that kept repeating automatically.<\/p>\n<h2>iPhone Clock Alarms<\/h2>\n<p>The iPhone Clock app has Alarms, and Timers, which are for different purposes.<\/p>\n<p>For things that get done the same time every day or every weekday, I set an Alarm.<\/p>\n<p>For example, during the summer, my intern and I had two Zoom calls every day \u2013 9 AM and 2 PM.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I set iPhone alarms for 8:55 AM and 1:55 PM, Monday to Friday, so I\u2019d be ready for those calls.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s important to show up on time for a business call!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>iPhone Clock Timers<\/h2>\n<p>I use Phone timers most days too, when I want an alert after a specific amount of time.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For example, at meal times, I set a timer for any \u201ctimed\u201d step in a recipe. Last night, the soup had to simmer for 30 minutes, before it was ready to eat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>iPhone Shortcut Start Timer<\/h2>\n<p>This week, I took my Timer game to a whole new level! I created an iPhone Shortcut, to automatically start a 30 minute timer.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The timer will remind me to stand up, and move around, after I\u2019ve been working at my desk for 30 minutes<\/li>\n<li>To trigger that shortcut, I stuck an NFC tag to my desk, beside the keyboard<\/li>\n<li>When I tap the NFC tag with the top of my iPhone, it triggers the &#8220;Start Timer&#8221; shortcut.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/nfctagdesk01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px currentcolor; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"NFC tag on my office desk, beside the keyboard\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/nfctagdesk01_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"NFC tag on my office desk, beside the keyboard\" width=\"450\" height=\"450\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Why Does the Timer Keep Repeating?<\/h2>\n<p>The NFC tag and shortcut worked well, but there was one annoying problem.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Every time I turned the Timer off, my phone <strong>automatically started the Timer again<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Did I set it up incorrectly? Maybe I put the Start Timer action in the shortcut twice.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nope. I checked the shortcut, and it only had one action \u2013 Start Timer. There was no \u201cRepeat\u201d action.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I did a Google search, but all the articles just said that timers don\u2019t repeat automatically.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"fix\">The Fix \u2013 No More Repeating Timers!<\/h2>\n<p>A few hours later, I finally figured out what the problem was, and how to fix it.<\/p>\n<p>As with so many technology problems, it was <strong>user error<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I thought the small grey Timer button was \u201cStop\u201d, just like the Alarm button.<\/li>\n<li>I was wrong.
