First thing in the morning, I open my Daily Notes file, using a desktop shortcut.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s quick and easy \u2013 right-click the desktop icon, point to the \u201cOpen with\u201d command, and then click on Notepad++.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/notepadpp_rightclick02.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"Open with command, click on Notepad++\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/notepadpp_rightclick02_thumb.png\" alt=\"Open with command, click on Notepad++\" width=\"443\" height=\"220\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Double-Click Problem<\/h3>\n<p>Unfortunately, if I accidentally double-click on .txt file\u2019s icon, the Windows Notepad application opens, instead of Notepad++.<\/p>\n<p>After ignoring this inconvenience for way too long (decades?), I finally fixed that double-click problem.<\/p>\n<p>I made Notepad++ the default program for opening .txt files in Windows, instead of Notepad.\u00a0You can see the steps in the next section.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fun Fact<\/strong>: Microsoft <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Windows_Notepad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">launched Notepad in 1983<\/a>, and included it when you bought a $195 mouse!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Set Notepad++ As Default<\/h3>\n<p>Here are the steps that I followed, to set Notepad++ as the default program to open txt files in Windows 10.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Tip<\/strong>: See my icon image warning, at the end of this article, if you don\u2019t like bright colours!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In Windows Explorer, or on the Desktop:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Right-click on a .txt file<\/li>\n<li>In the pop-up menu, click Properties (at the bottom of the list)<\/li>\n<li>In the Properties window, go to the General tab<\/li>\n<li>Near the top right, click the Change button<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Choose an App<\/h3>\n<p>A new window opens, with the title, \u201cHow do you want to open .txt files from now on?\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Scroll to the bottom of the list, and click <strong>More apps<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The bright blue text on a white background makes it hard to read!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/notepadpp_default02.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"How do you want to open .txt files from now on\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/notepadpp_default02_thumb.png\" alt=\"How do you want to open .txt files from now on\" width=\"359\" height=\"395\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Next, scroll to the bottom of the expanded list<\/li>\n<li>Click on the link to <strong>Look for another app on this PC<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/notepadpp_default03.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"Look for another app on this PC\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/notepadpp_default03_thumb.png\" alt=\"Look for another app on this PC\" width=\"345\" height=\"305\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Window: Open With<\/h3>\n<p>When the Open With window appears, it probably shows the Windows &gt; <strong>Program Files<\/strong> folder<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In that folder, scroll down to find the Notepad++ folder\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Tip<\/strong>: If you don&#8217;t see Notepad++, go up one level, to Windows, then open the <strong>Program Files (x86)<\/strong> folder.\n<ul>\n<li>That\u2019s where Notepad++ is stored on my computer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Double-click on the Notepad++ folder, to open it<\/li>\n<li>In the folder, locate the <strong>Notepad++.exe<\/strong> file<\/li>\n<li>Double-click on it, to set that as the default program to open .txt files<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/notepadpp_folder01.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px currentcolor; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"Notepad++.exe file in Notepad++ folder\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/notepadpp_folder01_thumb.png\" alt=\"Notepad++.exe file in Notepad++ folder\" width=\"368\" height=\"206\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Warning: Bright Desktop Icons<\/h3>\n<p>Here\u2019s a warning for you, if you like a clean, minimalist environment!<\/p>\n<p>After you change the default .txt program to Notepad++, all the related icons will change, to show the Notepad++ icon, with the little green chameleon on them.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Double-click on a text file icon now, and the file opens in Notepad++<\/li>\n<li>Hooray!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/notepadshortcuticons01.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"notepad icons compared to notepad++ icons\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/notepadshortcuticons01_thumb.png\" alt=\"notepad icons compared to notepad++ icons\" width=\"224\" height=\"226\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve got lots of text file shortcuts on my desktop, so it was a bit jarring when all the plain white icons changed to bright green, yellow and white icons!<\/p>\n<p>After a couple of days you might get used to the new look, but if not, you can change the shortcut icons.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s what I did &#8212; I changed a few of the individual icons back to the plain notepad. Here are the steps:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Right-click the desktop icon that you want to change<\/li>\n<li>In the pop-up menu, at the bottom of the list, click Properties<\/li>\n<li>When the Properties window opens, go to the Shortcut tab<\/li>\n<li>About halfway down, click the Change Icon button<\/li>\n<li>The first icon was the plain notepad, so I clicked the OK button to use that\n<ul>\n<li>You can scroll to the right, and choose a different icon, if you prefer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Click OK, twice, to close the windows<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The selected desktop shortcut now has the new icon that you applied.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>All day, every day, I make notes in the Notepad++ application while I&#8217;m working.
