My avi videos only played the audio, and showed a black screen. After several failed attempts to fix the problem, I finally got them working with the Microsoft Photos program. It was easy, and you can see the converted video at the end of this post.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Update &#8211; 4\/22\/2025:<\/strong> The latest version of the Microsoft Photos program no longer includes a Video Editor. Instead, you can use the free version of <a href=\"https:\/\/clipchamp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Microsoft&#8217;s ClipChamp<\/a> video editing program. I was able to drag my avi video into ClipChamp, and save the video in mp4 format.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Old Photos and Videos<\/h3>\n<p>Recently, I found a folder of photos from a trip to Niagara Falls, back in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s one of the photos, showing the American falls, with a rainbow, and the Maid of the Mist sailing past.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/2008_niagara_rainbowus01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px currentcolor; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"Niagara Falls with rainbow 2008\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/2008_niagara_rainbowus01_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"Niagara Falls with rainbow 2008\" width=\"429\" height=\"338\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There were several videos too, all in avi format.<\/p>\n<p>Usually, video files show a preview in Windows Explorer, but these videos just showed a black screen shot.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/videos_avi02b.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px currentcolor; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"video previews in Windows Explorer\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/videos_avi02b_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"video previews in Windows Explorer\" width=\"338\" height=\"141\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>AVI Video in Default Player<\/h3>\n<p>To see what was in one of the old videos, I double-clicked on it.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft&#8217;s default media player, Movies &amp; TV, opened, and the video started playing automatically.<\/p>\n<p>The audio was working, but the screen was black, just like it was in the preview.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/videos_avi03.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px currentcolor; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"default media player, Movies &amp; TV\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/videos_avi03_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"default media player, Movies &amp; TV\" width=\"350\" height=\"263\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Adobe Express Convert to MP4<\/h3>\n<p>Next, I tried Adobe Media Encoder, and that didn&#8217;t work. It just created an video with the same problem, but in a different format.<\/p>\n<p>After that, I went to Adobe&#8217;s free online video converter: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adobe.com\/express\/feature\/video\/convert\/avi-to-mp4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Adobe Express Convert AVI to MP4<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This tool was simple, and easy to use, but the result, once again, was a video with audio and a black screen.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/videos_avi05.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px currentcolor; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"Adobe's fee online video converter\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/videos_avi05_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"Adobe's fee online video converter\" width=\"345\" height=\"289\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Other Video Conversion Attempts<\/h3>\n<p>Next, I tried a couple of other video programs that I use \u2013 Camtasia Studio, and VLC.<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;re both excellent programs, but neither one helped me with with this avi video problem.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Camtasia played the video, but audio only<\/li>\n<li>VLC let me try to convert the video to a different format, but the results were really poor quality. There were so many format options and video settings that I didn&#8217;t know which ones would work best.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Perhaps someone with expertise in video converting would have better luck with VLC!<\/p>\n<h3>Microsoft Photos<\/h3>\n<p>Finally, I tried the Microsoft Photos program, and finally got the avi videos working correctly! Microsoft Photos, which comes with Microsoft Windows, has a built-in Video Editor.<\/p>\n<p>I often use the <a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/2018\/12\/05\/how-to-stop-iphone-photo-videos\/\">Video Editor to make quick video and photo<\/a> montages. It&#8217;s easy to use, and you don&#8217;t have to be a professional video editor to get things done!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Video Editor is a replacement for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Windows_Movie_Maker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Microsoft&#8217;s Movie Maker<\/a> (Wikipedia entry), which was discontinued in 2017. I loved that program, and used it for years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Video Editor Fix<\/h3>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what you can try, to fix your avi files, and get the video showing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On your keyboard, press the Window key, to open the Windows Start menu<\/li>\n<li>Start typing Photos, and Windows should show programs that match what you&#8217;ve typed<\/li>\n<li>Click on the Photos app, to open it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/photos_videoeditor01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px currentcolor; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"open photos program\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/photos_videoeditor01_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"open photos program\" width=\"271\" height=\"220\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Start a Video Project<\/h3>\n<p>Next, follow these steps:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At the top of the Photos program window, click Video Editor<\/li>\n<li>In the Video Editor, click the New Video Project button<\/li>\n<li>Type a name for your project, then click the OK button<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/photos_videoeditor02.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px currentcolor; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"enter video project name\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/photos_videoeditor02_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"enter video project name\" width=\"352\" height=\"230\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Add Your AVI Video<\/h3>\n<p>Next, add your problem avi video \u2013 or, add multiple videos!<\/p>\n<p>To add videos:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Drag one or more videos onto the Video Editor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>OR<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Click the Add button, then browse to find the video(s) you want to add<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>TIP: Don&#8217;t be concerned if the video shows a black screen preview when you add it to Video Editor.<\/p>\n<h3>Create Your New Video<\/h3>\n<p>And this step is where the magic happens!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Right-click your video<\/li>\n<li>In the pop-up menu, click Place in Storyboard<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/photos_videoeditor04.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px currentcolor; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"video editor place in storyboard\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/photos_videoeditor04_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"video editor place in storyboard\" width=\"236\" height=\"254\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The video is added to the timeline, at the bottom of the Video Editor window.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Note: Its screen preview is still black<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The video also shows in the big video preview, at the top right of the Video Editor window.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In the big preview, the video shows correctly!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To see the video, click the Play button, below the big preview window.<\/p>\n<h3>Before You Convert AVI Video<\/h3>\n<p>The final step is to export the video in a different format, so it will play correctly in other video players.<\/p>\n<p>However, before you export the video, you might want to change the output size:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At the top right of the Video Editor window, click the 3-dot button<\/li>\n<li>Choose the size and orientation that best match your video<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My videos were Landscape, and 4:3 ratio<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/photos_videoeditor05.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px currentcolor; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"change size and orientation\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/photos_videoeditor05_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"change size and orientation\" width=\"362\" height=\"330\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Export Your Video<\/h3>\n<p>Finally, you&#8217;re ready to export the video, using a different format<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At the top right of the Video Editor window, click the Finish Video command<\/li>\n<li>In the Finish Video dialog box, click the arrow to see Video Quality options<\/li>\n<li>Choose the Video Quality setting you want to use\n<ul>\n<li>I usually use the recommended setting of High 1080p<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Then, click the Export button, to start the video conversion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/photos_videoeditor06.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px currentcolor; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"choose video quality\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/photos_videoeditor06_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"choose video quality\" width=\"394\" height=\"256\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Watch the Converted Video<\/h3>\n<p>As soon as the video conversion is finished, the Microsoft Movies &amp; TV program should open automatically, with your video playing.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If the video looks great, congratulations, and you&#8217;re done!<\/li>\n<li>If the video looks a bit choppy, you can try another export, to see if you can improve it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For the next export,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Try a different Video Quality setting, and see how that turns out<\/li>\n<li>OR, click on More Options. Then, remove the check mark from &#8220;Use hardware-accelerated encoding&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Maybe those changes will help.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/photos_videoeditor07.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px currentcolor; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"more options for export\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/photos_videoeditor07_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"more options for export\" width=\"427\" height=\"277\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Niagara Falls Video<\/h3>\n<p>But sometimes, we just made blurry, shaky videos in the past, and there&#8217;s not much we can do to improve them!<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s still fun to see those old videos though. For example, here&#8217;s the Niagara Falls video that I converted from avi format to mp4, using Microsoft Video Editor in the Photos program.<\/p>\n<p>I exported with the following settings:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Video Quality: High 1080<\/li>\n<li>4:3 Landscape<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As you can see, my old camera didn&#8217;t take high quality videos. This certainly makes me appreciate the videos that my iPhone takes now.!<\/p>\n<p>P.S. Those aren&#8217;t my kids that you can hear in the background, but I love the one who says, &#8220;Whoa!
