That reminded me of a quick way to check email headers in Outlook, without opening the message.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>New Look for Office 365<\/h3>\n<p>When I opened Outlook this morning, there was a pop-up screen, announcing a &#8220;New Look&#8221; in Office 365 (Current Channel).<\/p>\n<p>The first thing I noticed was the change to the Quick Access Toolbar (QAT)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The QAT was below the Ribbon, leaving blank space above the Ribbon<\/li>\n<li>All the QAT commands had labels \u2013 and some were long!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Well, that wasn&#8217;t going to work for me!<\/p>\n<p>Note: I was already grumpy because Apple had locked me out of my devices, and I needed to click a button in their verification email, to get back in.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/outlookmailheaders06.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"qat with labels below ribbon\" style=\"border: 0px currentcolor; border-image: none; display: inline; background-image: none;\" alt=\"qat with labels below ribbon\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/outlookmailheaders06_thumb.png\" width=\"445\" height=\"275\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Hide the Command Labels<\/h3>\n<p>With the labels showing, there isn&#8217;t room for very many commands on the QAT.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, that was easy to fix:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Right-click on the QAT, to see a pop-up list of commands for customizing it.<\/li>\n<li>To get rid of those space-hogging labels, click on Hide Command Labels<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/outlookmailheaders04.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"right-click qat\" style=\"border: 0px currentcolor; border-image: none; display: inline; background-image: none;\" alt=\"right-click qat\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/outlookmailheaders04_thumb.png\" width=\"430\" height=\"206\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Move QAT to Above the Ribbon<\/h3>\n<p>That pop-up list didn&#8217;t have a command to move the QAT though, and I wanted it above the Ribbon.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>That&#8217;s where it&#8217;s always been<\/li>\n<li>Why use an extra chunk of space for the QAT, and leave blank space at the top?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To find the command that moves the QAT:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At the right end of the QAT, click the little triangle button (Customize Quick Access Toolbar)<\/li>\n<li>Way down at the bottom of the pop-up menu, click Show Above the Ribbon<\/li>\n<li>The Hide Command Labels command is on that pop-up list too<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/outlookmailheaders05.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"show above the ribbon command\" style=\"border: 0px currentcolor; border-image: none; display: inline; background-image: none;\" alt=\"show above the ribbon command\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/outlookmailheaders05_thumb.png\" width=\"353\" height=\"223\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Message Options Command<\/h3>\n<p>Anyway, seeing those command labels did have one benefit \u2013 it reminded me about the Message Options command. I added that to the QAT a long time ago, and then forgot about it.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a quick way to see the Internet headers for an email message, if you&#8217;re not sure it&#8217;s legitimate.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the Message Options button in my QAT, above the Ribbon, and without the command labels.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/outlookmailheaders02.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"add message options command\" style=\"border: 0px currentcolor; border-image: none; display: inline; background-image: none;\" alt=\"message options command on qat\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/outlookmailheaders02_thumb.png\" width=\"400\" height=\"230\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Add Message Options Command to QAT<\/h3>\n<p>According to my unreliable memory, that Message Options command used to be on the Ribbon. You could select a message from the Inbox list, then click that command to see its Internet header information.<\/p>\n<p>My notes about adding the Message Options command to the QAT are from 2015, so it&#8217;s been gone for a long time!<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how to add it to the QAT:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Right-click the QAT, and click Customize Quick Access Toolbar<\/li>\n<li>At the top of the Customize Quick Access Toolbar window, click the arrow for Choose Commands from<\/li>\n<li>Click Commands Not in the Ribbon<\/li>\n<li>Scroll down the list of commands, and click on Message Options<\/li>\n<li>Click the Add button, to add it to the QAT<\/li>\n<li>Click OK, to close the window<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/outlookmailheaders01.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"add message options command\" style=\"border: 0px currentcolor; border-image: none; display: inline; background-image: none;\" alt=\"add message options command\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/outlookmailheaders01_thumb.png\" width=\"450\" height=\"374\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Check Email Headers<\/h3>\n<p>After you add the button, follow these steps when you want to check a message in Outlook:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Select a message in your Inbox list (or any other folder) \u2013 you don&#8217;t have to open the message<\/li>\n<li>Click the Message Options button on the QAT<\/li>\n<li>The Properties dialog box opens<\/li>\n<li>At the bottom of the dialog box, you can see the Internet header information<\/li>\n<li>Use the scroll bar at the right side of the text box, to see all the details<\/li>\n<li>When you&#8217;re finished, click the Close button.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you&#8217;re not sure what any of that information means, this <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Email#Message_header\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wikipedia article has a section on Message Headers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It might help \u2013 or leave you even more confused!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/outlookmailheaders03.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"email internet headers\" style=\"border: 0px currentcolor; border-image: none; display: inline; background-image: none;\" alt=\"email internet headers\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/outlookmailheaders03_thumb.png\" width=\"400\" height=\"270\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>___________________<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Microsoft Office 365 got a &#8220;New Look&#8221; today, so I changed a few settings in Excel and Outlook.
