The main reason for leaving it open is because Dreamweaver takes a long time to start again, after it&#8217;s been shut down. And over time, it takes longer and longer \u2013 up to several minutes. I finally found a solution to that problem, and am posting it here, so I can remember the fix for next time!<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Long Time to Start<\/h3>\n<p>I&#8217;ve used Dreamweaver for years, and have been putting up with its &#8220;long time to start&#8221; problem forever. Because I leave the program running, it&#8217;s only an issue once a month or so, if I reboot, or if Dreamweaver crashes (like it did today).<\/p>\n<p>Finally though, I&#8217;d had enough, and did a Google search to see if there was a solution. After many dead ends, I found the solution in Stack Overflow. Why didn&#8217;t I look there first? That&#8217;s my go-to place for Excel programming problems.<\/p>\n<h3>Check the Registry<\/h3>\n<p>It can be hard to find solutions to problems like this, because everyone describes it differently. I say it&#8217;s taking a long time to start, but other people say that Dreamweaver is hanging or Dreamweaver is freezing.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, a few searches led me to <a title=\"this thread in Stack Overflow\" href=\"https:\/\/stackoverflow.com\/questions\/18265967\/adobe-dreamweaver-cc-freezing-on-start-up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this thread in Stack Overflow<\/a>, where there were a few suggestions, including &#8220;run it as administrator&#8221;, and &#8220;kill all the Dreamweaver processes&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The solution that I tried\u00a0 <a title=\"recommended deleting a bunch of temporary files in the Registry\" href=\"https:\/\/stackoverflow.com\/a\/42334679\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recommended deleting a bunch of temporary files in the Registry<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>And what I discovered is that DW generates millions of queries to registry key <strong>HKCU\\SOFTWARE\\Adobe\\Dreamweaver CC 2015\\Temp File List<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Over the time Dreamweaver accumulates here thousands empty entries like <strong>pathXXX<\/strong> and infinitely loop over them when starting.<\/p>\n<p>So, removing all this entries makes DW start in 3 seconds<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The explanation made sense, and when I checked my Registry file, there where many, many of those files.<\/p>\n<h3>Delete Registry Entries<\/h3>\n<p>To fix this problem, here are the steps that I followed.<\/p>\n<p>WARNING: As always, <b>make a backup of the Registry<\/b>, before making any changes, and <b>try this at your own risk<\/b>!<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Before You Start<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Close Dreamweaver<\/li>\n<li><b>Make a backup<\/b> of the Registry file &#8212; there are <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/kb\/136393\/en-us\">instructions on the Microsoft website<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2. Open the Registry Editor<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To open the Registry Editor, press the Window key on your keyboard, then type <strong>reg<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In the list of matching items, select the Registry Editor, and press Enter<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/dreamweaverregistry01.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px currentcolor; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"dreamweaverregistry01\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/dreamweaverregistry01_thumb.png\" alt=\"dreamweaverregistry01\" width=\"367\" height=\"192\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If a confirmation message appears, asking if you want to allow this application to make changes, click Yes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>3. Find the Registry Entries<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Next, you&#8217;ll find the Temp File List key, where the unnecessary entries are stored<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In the Registry Editor, find this key in the list at the left:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Computer\\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Adobe\\Dreamweaver CC 2015\\Temp File List<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Click on that key to select it<\/li>\n<li>On the right side, you&#8217;ll see the key&#8217;s contents, with &#8220;(Default)&#8221; at the top, then a\u00a0 long list of entries whose names start with &#8220;path&#8221;. The screen shot below shows a few of the &#8220;path&#8221; files in my Registry \u2013 there are many more below that!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/dreamweaverregistry02.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px currentcolor; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"dreamweaverregistry02\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/dreamweaverregistry02_thumb.png\" alt=\"dreamweaverregistry02\" width=\"424\" height=\"237\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Delete the Registry Entries<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The final step is to delete those unnecessary entries in the Temp File List key<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Near the top of the list, click on the first &#8220;path&#8221; entry, to select it\n<ul>\n<li>\u2013 Do <strong>NOT<\/strong> select the &#8220;(Default item)&#8221;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/dreamweaverregistry03.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px currentcolor; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"dreamweaverregistry03\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/dreamweaverregistry03_thumb.png\" alt=\"dreamweaverregistry03\" width=\"354\" height=\"184\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Then, scroll to the bottom of the list<\/li>\n<li>Press the Shift key, and click on the last &#8220;path&#8221; entry, to select all the entries down to that point<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/dreamweaverregistry04.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px currentcolor; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"dreamweaverregistry04\" src=\"https:\/\/debradalgleish.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/dreamweaverregistry04_thumb.png\" alt=\"dreamweaverregistry04\" width=\"319\" height=\"256\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On your keyboard, press the Delete key, to delete the selected entries.<\/li>\n<li>A confirmation message will appear \u2013 &#8220;Deleting certain registry values could cause system instability. Are you sure you want to permanently delete these values?&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Click the Yes button, to confirm that you want to delete the values.<\/li>\n<li>Close the Registry Editor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Open Dreamweaver<\/h3>\n<p>After you delete the unnecessary entries, open Dreamweaver again, to see if that solved the problem.<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully, the fix worked, and Dreamweaver opens in a few seconds, instead of a few minutes!<\/p>\n<p>Keep these instructions handy though.
